42nd China Guardian Quarterly Auctions raise 69.69 million

After an exciting two days of auctions, the 42nd China Guardian Quarterly Auctions ended perfectly with a total of 6.969 million yuan in sales on June 28, 2015.

The auctions’ outcome met China Guardian’s expectations and reflects the current market.

Auctions in two categories, Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy; Porcelain, Jade, and Works of Art, achieved remarkable results.

Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
More than 1600 items were auctioned at the four sessions of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, namely, A Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from SONGSHI SHANFANG, Modern and Contemporary Ink Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, Collection of Letters to Chen Naiqian, Classical Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, which fetched 56.1 million yuan.

Collecting 114 masterpieces of contemporary Chinese paintings, the session, A Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from SONGSHI SHANFANG, witnessed intense bidding among collectors at the auction site. Featuring a vigorous style and perfect layout, the painting, Landscape of Yellow Mountain co-created by Dong Shouping and Liu Jiyou, was a highlight for this session and was sold for 1,207,500 yuan.

The session, Modern and Contemporary Ink Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, gathered masterpieces of different genres and styles, greatly appraised by collectors. Zhang Daqian’s work, Looking Over Mountains and Miss Hometown (Chinese: 望山怀乡) was auctioned first and sold for 4,600,000 yuan. The painting was created in 1963, when Zhang and his nephew were travelling in Switzerland. The landscape there bears a certain resemblance to China’s Sichuan province, so Zhang completed the painting to express his homesickness.

Chen Yuan’s letter

 

The session, Collection of Letters to Chen Naiqian, selected nearly 600 letters of several masters from the Republican period of China, which reveal scenes of daily life and social changes of that period of time. Chen Yuan’s letter was sold for 94,300 yuan, while Xie Wuliang’s was sold for 74,750 yuan.

The Classic Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy session was well received by the collectors and was very representative of the brand. The pieces sold for high prices, with some items selling for many times the expected price. A classic Chinese painting created by an anonymous artist, Pavilions on Mountain (Chinese: 仙山楼阁图), was sold for 575,000 yuan, 190 times higher than the estimated price.

Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art

The 42nd China Guardian Quarterly Auctions gathered 1,100 items for the section of Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art. Its total sales volume adds up to 13, 59 million yuan.

A color-glaze incised-design jar with chrysanthemum pattern from the period of Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was the highlight of the porcelain session. It was sold for 1,207,500 yuan.

In the session of jade and works of art, a gilt bronze Buddha statue from the 15th century was especially favored by the collectors and was sold for 552,000 yuan.
